Cells as units of life
Cell theory describes the organization and reproduction of cellular life.
Key knowledge
Cellular organisms consist of one or more cells, and new cells arise from existing cells. Cells are basic structural and functional units of these organisms. Prokaryotic cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus; typical eukaryotic organization includes a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Conditions and scope
- Describes cellular life and present-day cell reproduction; it does not explain the first origin of cells.
- Specialized cells can lose structures during development, so the typical organization is not a checklist for every mature cell.
