Climate feedback mechanisms
Climate responses can amplify or damp a change.
Key knowledge
A climate feedback occurs when a response to climate change alters the energy budget and further changes climate. Reduced snow or ice reflectivity can amplify warming. Increased thermal emission as temperature rises provides a stabilizing response; the total outcome combines multiple processes.
Conditions and scope
- Positive means amplification and negative means damping in the stated convention, not good or bad.
- Feedback strength depends on state and timescale; one positive feedback does not by itself imply runaway change.
