Ecological interactions and context
Interaction categories describe effects on participating populations.
Key knowledge
Competition, predation, parasitism, mutualism and commensalism classify ecological interactions by their effects on participants. Mutualism benefits both participants, while competition can reduce each participant's access to resources. Classification concerns the studied interaction and environmental context.
Conditions and scope
- Effects can change with conditions or with the life stage and scale observed.
- An observed association alone does not establish the sign or cause of an effect.
