Reproduction and sexual life-cycle patterns
The placement of meiosis and fertilization differs among life cycles.
Key knowledge
Asexual reproduction can produce offspring without gamete fusion; sexual eukaryotic cycles combine meiosis and fertilization. Animals commonly have diploid-dominant cycles, whereas plants alternate multicellular haploid and diploid generations. Other lineages have different distributions of these stages.
Conditions and scope
- Asexual descendants can differ through mutation; they are not guaranteed to remain genetically identical.
- Sexual reproduction need not involve two separate individuals, and meiosis does not directly produce gametes in every life cycle.
