ChemistryAtom economy, process mass intensity and waste accounting

Theoretical atom incorporation and actual process material use answer different questions.

Method
Earth & cosmosProjecting a planar bed into a geological section

For a locally planar bed with true dip δ, choose horizontal x toward its down-dip direction and elevation z upward.

Method
Earth & cosmosWalther's law and facies transitions

Within a conformable depositional succession, vertically successive facies can represent environments that were laterally adjacent as the depositional system migrated.

Method
Earth & cosmosDepositional sequences and bounding surfaces

A depositional sequence is a relatively conformable succession bounded by unconformities and their correlative conformities under the stated sequence model.

Definition
Earth & cosmosAccommodation, sediment supply and stacking

Accommodation is space available for sediment accumulation.

Model
Earth & cosmosFinite Euler rotations in plate reconstruction

On a spherical rigid-plate model, displacement relative to a specified reference plate is represented by a finite rotation about an Euler pole.

Method
Earth & cosmosEvidence and uncertainty in plate reconstructions

Conjugate continental geology and fossils, ocean-floor magnetic reversal sequences, spreading geometry and paleomagnetic directions provide complementary constraints on past plate positions.

Method
Earth & cosmosPaleomagnetic inclination and latitude

For a geocentric axial dipole with normal-polarity directions expressed northward and downward, tanI=2tanλ relates field inclination to latitude.

Method
Earth & cosmosPhanerozoic life and environmental history

The Phanerozoic comprises the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras.

Empirical finding
Earth & cosmosMajor Phanerozoic extinction intervals

The end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, end-Permian, end-Triassic and end-Cretaceous intervals mark especially prominent losses in the Phanerozoic fossil record.

Empirical finding
Earth & cosmosOptical mineral identification and ambiguity

A petrographic microscope combines observations in plane-polarized and crossed-polarized light: relief, colour or pleochroism, cleavage, extinction behaviour and interference response help distinguish minerals.

Method
Earth & cosmosBecke-line comparison of refractive index

In a suitable transmitted-light grain–medium boundary test, increasing the objective-to-specimen separation moves the Becke bright line into the material of higher refractive index.

Method
Earth & cosmosBirefringent optical retardation

For a homogeneous plane-parallel transparent plate at normal incidence with two effective indices for the common wave-normal direction, optical path retardation is Γ=d(n_slow−n_fast).

Method
Earth & cosmosUniaxial and biaxial optical indicatrices

The optical indicatrix represents directional refractive behaviour in an ideal transparent anisotropic crystal.

Definition
Earth & cosmosBinary equilibrium phase fractions

For two equilibrium phases α and β with compositions x_α<x_β and bulk composition x₀ between them, conservation gives f_α=(x_β−x₀)/(x_β−x_α) and f_β=1−f_α.

Method
Earth & cosmosBinary eutectic equilibrium

In a simple binary eutectic system at fixed pressure, liquid can coexist with two distinct solid phases at the eutectic temperature and liquid composition.

Model
Earth & cosmosPeritectic reactions and incongruent melting

In a binary peritectic equilibrium at fixed pressure, an earlier solid and liquid react to form a different solid at an invariant temperature.

Model
Earth & cosmosSolid solution, tie lines and exsolution

A solid solution accommodates component substitution in one crystal phase.

Model
Earth & cosmosTernary compositions and tie-triangle accounting

Three-component compositions occupy a normalized triangle: x_A+x_B+x_C=1 with nonnegative fractions.

Method
Earth & cosmosElement and isotope mass balance in mixing

For closed mixing by mass of two endmembers, concentration is C_mix=fC₁+(1−f)C₂.

Method
Earth & cosmosClosed-system radiogenic isochrons

For parent P decaying into daughter D at constant λ, normalization to a stable isotope S gives D/S=(D/S)₀+(P/S)(e^(λt)−1).

Method
Earth & cosmosUranium–lead concordia and discordance

For a closed system with corrected common lead and retained decay-chain products, radiogenic ratios satisfy ²⁰⁶Pb*/²³⁸U=e^(λ₂₃₈t)−1 and ²⁰⁷Pb*/²³⁵U=e^(λ₂₃₅t)−1.

Method
Earth & cosmosElastic specific storage of a saturated aquifer

Specific storage S_s is water volume released per aquifer bulk volume per unit decline in hydraulic head.

Model
Earth & cosmosAquifer transmissivity, storativity and drainage

For a vertically uniform confined aquifer of fixed thickness b, transmissivity is T=Kb and storativity S=S_sb.

Definition
Earth & cosmosTransient saturated groundwater diffusion

Combining classical elastic storage with Darcy flux yields ∇·(K∇h)=S_s∂h/∂t in a saturated aquifer without internal sources.

Model
Earth & cosmosUnsaturated retention, conductivity and hysteresis

Unsaturated water content θ and conductivity K depend on pressure head ψ and the medium's pore structure.

Definition
Earth & cosmosRichards equation for unsaturated water flow

In a rigid porous medium with effectively incompressible water and fixed air pressure, local water conservation with unsaturated Darcy flux gives θ_t=∇·[K(ψ)(∇ψ+e_z)].

Model
Earth & cosmosWater continuity in a river reach

For a one-dimensional incompressible reach, ∂(A+A_s)/∂t+∂Q/∂x=q_L balances conveying area A, additional nonconveying storage area A_s and discharge Q.

Model
Earth & cosmosExner conservation of bed sediment

For a constant-width reach with constant bed porosity p, sediment-solid conservation gives (1−p)Bη_t=−∂Q_s/∂x.

Model
Earth & cosmosGlen-type ice deformation law

An isotropic incompressible Glen-type model relates deviatoric stress τ to strain rate by ε̇ᵢⱼ=Aτ_e^(n−1)τᵢⱼ, where τ_e=√(τ:τ/2),A>0 and n>0.

Atom economy, process mass intensity and waste accounting

Chemistry

Theoretical atom incorporation and actual process material use answer different questions.

Key knowledge

For a balanced reaction and one selected desired product, theoretical atom economy is its stoichiometric product mass divided by total stoichiometric reactant mass. Process mass intensity instead divides measured total process input mass by isolated product mass; the E factor divides waste mass by product mass. With matching boundaries and complete input-to-product-plus-waste accounting, PMI=E+1. Neither ratio measures toxicity, energy demand or actual reaction yield by itself.

Values and equations

AE=100 νp Mp/(Σreactants νj Mj); PMI=min/mproduct; E=mwaste/mproduct; PMI=E+1 when min=mproduct+mwaste

AE
theoretical atom economy expressed as percent %
νp,νj
positive balanced coefficients of selected product and reactants 1
Mp,Mj
molar masses of the selected product and reactants kg mol⁻¹
PMI,E
process mass intensity and waste-to-product mass ratio 1
min,mproduct,mwaste
accounted process input, isolated selected product and waste masses kg

Conditions and scope

  • Include stoichiometric coefficients in atom economy. State reaction, selected product, process steps, water/solvent inclusion, recycled flows and product composition/purity; use compatible mass units and positive product mass.
  • PMI=E+1 requires the same accounted streams and no unaccounted accumulation or coproduct allocation. Recycling conventions and water exclusions can otherwise prevent that equality. Stoichiometric atom economy excludes solvent and excess-reagent use and does not predict isolated yield.

Evidence and review

Read ACS Roundtable slides6 and8: all-inputs including water PMI and mass-intensity/E relationship; read the original Sheldon review abstract's atom-economy and waste/product definitions, not its full paywalled paper. Wrote the balanced-coefficient atom-economy form and conditional PMI=E+1 directly from mass conservation. Excluded dated sector benchmarks and treating a mass metric as complete environmental assessment.
