Earth & cosmosNonuniqueness and resolution in gravity inference

Different subsurface density structures can yield the same external gravitational field.

Method
Earth & cosmosConductive heat diffusion and a thermal length scale

For stationary homogeneous material with constant positiveρ,c_p andk, no internal heat production and one-dimensional conduction, ρc_pT_t=kT_zz, with thermal diffusivityκ=k/(ρc_p).

Model
Earth & cosmosPassive and active Earth-observation signals

Method
Earth & cosmosDigital values, TOA radiance and reflectance

Method
Earth & cosmosThermal brightness temperature and surface-temperature limits

A Landsat thermal-band TOA radianceL_λ>0 maps to product brightness temperature T_B=K₂/ln(K₁/L_λ+1), using its band-specific metadata constants.

Model
Earth & cosmosEnergy balance for brittle crack extension

Adversarial robustness needs a threat model

Research context

A norm-bounded adversarial evaluation asks whether an attacker can change a model's prediction using perturbations within a specified set around an input.

Key knowledge

A norm-bounded adversarial evaluation asks whether an attacker can change a model's prediction using perturbations within a specified set around an input. Goodfellow and colleagues' gradient-sign method takes an L-infinity step based on the input loss gradient. Attack success is empirical evidence for vulnerability under that model; failure of a finite attack search is not proof of robustness. Norm, input scaling, attacker knowledge and physical/perceptual relevance determine the claim.

Values and equations

x_adv=x+epsilon sign(grad_x ell(theta,x,y)), with valid-input projection when required

x

epsilon

Conditions and scope

  • Specify norm/radius, valid-input projection, targeted versus untargeted goal, white/black-box access and attack budget.
  • Adversarial perturbations, distribution shift and random corruption are different evaluation populations.
