InformationFLP: deterministic asynchronous consensus boundary

Fischer, Lynch and Paterson prove that a deterministic consensus protocol in their fully asynchronous message-passing model can have an admissible nondeciding run with at most one crash.

Mathematical statement
InformationRaft log replication, durable state and liveness

Raft uses term-numbered leader election, majority voting and log matching to replicate a state machine under crash faults.

Method
InformationLinearizability and real-time operations

A linearizable object admits a sequential explanation in which each completed operation appears to take effect between invocation and response, preserving real-time precedence of nonoverlapping operations.

Definition
InformationCAP under partitions: a precise consistency tradeoff

In Gilbert and Lynch's asynchronous read/write model, an implementation cannot provide both atomic consistency and a terminating response to every request at every nonfailed node during arbitrary partitions.

Mathematical statement
InformationByzantine agreement and authentication assumptions

In the synchronous oral-message Byzantine-generals model, agreement with at most f faulty participants requires at least 3f+1 participants, with identifiable senders and reliable delivery but no unforgeable transferred signature chain.

Mathematical statement

Mathematics & logicRiesz representation for Hilbert functionals

Every continuous linear functional ell on a Hilbert space has a unique representing vector y with ell(x)=<x,y>, and ||ell||=||y||.

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicWeak convergence versus norm convergence

Weak convergence x-n→x in a Hilbert space means <x-n,y>→<x,y> for every fixed y.

Definition
Mathematics & logicTest-function topology and distributions

A distribution on an open U in R-n is a continuous linear functional on smooth compactly supported test functions.

Definition
Mathematics & logicDistribution derivatives and jump sources

A smooth n-manifold has locally Euclidean charts with smooth invertible transition maps, together with Hausdorff and second-countable topology.

Definition
Mathematics & logicCotangent vectors, tensors and pullback

A covector is a linear functional on the tangent space, and a tensor is multilinear on tangent/cotangent inputs.

Definition
Mathematics & logicExterior forms and the exterior derivative

Differential k-forms are smooth alternating covariant tensors.

Definition
Mathematics & logicGeneralized Stokes with boundary orientation

On a compact oriented smooth n-manifold with boundary, integrating d-omega equals integrating omega on the induced oriented boundary, for a smooth (n−1)-form.

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicde Rham cohomology and a non-exact closed form

de Rham cohomology quotients closed k-forms by exact k-forms.

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicHodge theory: topology meets elliptic analysis

On a compact smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary, every de Rham class has a unique harmonic representative.

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicGalois criterion for solving by radicals

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicA concrete radical extension with group S3

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicCharacter orthogonality and the S3 table

For complex finite-group representations, chi(g)=tr rho(g) is constant on conjugacy classes and irreducible characters are orthonormal under the group average.

Mathematical statement
Mathematics & logicConditional expectation on a sigma-algebra

For integrable X and a sub-sigma-algebra G, E[X|G] is a G-measurable integrable random variable whose integral over every event in G equals that of X.

Definition

CAP under partitions: a precise consistency tradeoff

Information

Research context

theory comparison · established · As of 2026-10-10

In Gilbert and Lynch's asynchronous read/write model, an implementation cannot provide both atomic consistency and a terminating response to every request at every nonfailed node during arbitrary partitions.

Key knowledge

In Gilbert and Lynch's asynchronous read/write model, an implementation cannot provide both atomic consistency and a terminating response to every request at every nonfailed node during arbitrary partitions. An isolated replica cannot always know the latest write while also answering every request. Changing the operation contract, permitting rejection/unavailability or weakening consistency changes the guarantee. CAP is not a permanent instruction to choose any two qualities for every system.

Conditions and scope

  • Consistency here is atomic/linearizable register behavior and availability is the paper's per-request termination condition.
  • Partition behavior and allowed response errors must be explicit; ordinary latency and practical uptime are different measurements.
