Research context

Independent second-class constraints φ_a=0 have an invertible Poisson matrix C_ab={φ_a,φ_b}.

Key knowledge

Independent second-class constraints φ_a=0 have an invertible Poisson matrix C_ab={φ_a,φ_b}. The Dirac bracket subtracts directions normal to their constraint surface and makes each φ_a bracket to zero there. First-class constraints instead require gauge-orbit reduction or an admissible gauge fixing before this inverse can be used.

Values and equations

{F,G}_D={F,G}−{F,φ_a}(C⁻¹)_ab{φ_b,G}; C_ab={φ_a,φ_b}

Conditions and scope

  • Constant-rank regular constraint surface and nonsingular C; redundant constraints invalidate the displayed inverse.
  • For 2n phase coordinates, m independent second-class constraints remove m dimensions. With independent first-class constraints and regular gauge reduction, each first-class constraint removes two; mixed systems need both counts.
