Eigenvalues and eigenvectors

Mathematics & logic

An eigenvector changes only by a scalar factor.

Key knowledge

For a linear operator T:V→V, a nonzero vector v is an eigenvector with eigenvalue λ when Tv=λv. The corresponding eigenspace consists of that equation's solutions, including zero.

Values and equations

Tv = λv, v ≠ 0

T
Linear operator
v
Nonzero eigenvector
λ
Eigenvalue in the scalar field

Conditions and scope

  • λ belongs to the chosen scalar field.
  • The zero vector is not an eigenvector; an operator need not have an eigenbasis.
