Clocked storage and sequential state

Information

Sequential circuits retain state, so current inputs alone do not determine their behavior.

Key knowledge

Sequential circuits use stored state in addition to current inputs. An edge-triggered flip-flop captures a data bit on its specified active clock edge; clocked registers combine such elements to store several bits. Reliable capture requires stable valid data through the specified setup and hold window.

Conditions and scope

  • Declare the active edge and applicable setup, hold and output-delay specifications.
  • This clocked abstraction does not guarantee capture when timing constraints are violated or resolve asynchronous-clock synchronization.

Clocked storage abstraction only; asynchronous synchronization and metastability require separate treatment.
