Virtual address spaces

Information

A process's address view is distinct from physical memory placement.

Key knowledge

An address space is the memory view provided to a process, including its code and data. With virtual memory, a process issues virtual addresses, which operating-system mechanisms and hardware translate to physical locations. Different processes can use the same virtual address without requiring the same physical location.

Conditions and scope

  • The address-space layout and translation mechanism depend on the system.
  • A large virtual address range does not guarantee that every address is mapped or that all of it is resident physical memory.
