Conduction, convection and thermal radiation

Physics

Heat can be transferred by microscopic interactions, fluid motion or electromagnetic radiation.

Key knowledge

Conduction transfers thermal energy through microscopic interactions and energy carriers without bulk transport of the material as a whole. Convection transfers thermal energy with bulk fluid motion, driven naturally by buoyancy or forced by an external flow. Thermal radiation transfers energy by electromagnetic radiation and can cross a vacuum. Several mechanisms can act together in one heat-transfer problem.

Conditions and scope

  • Heat denotes energy transferred because of a temperature difference, not a stored substance.
  • Natural convection requires a density and force configuration that drives flow; heating does not universally make every fluid parcel rise.

Agreement within this scope

Conduction, fluid convection and electromagnetic radiation are distinct transfer mechanisms; radiation can cross vacuum.

Heat is energy transferred because of temperature difference, while internal energy is a state quantity.
