TCP reliable byte-stream transport
TCP orders bytes and retransmits detected losses.
Key knowledge
TCP provides a connection-oriented, in-order byte stream using sequence numbers, per-segment checksums and retransmission. Application write boundaries need not correspond to received segment or read boundaries.
Conditions and scope
- Reliability does not guarantee eventual delivery over a failed connection or built-in liveness detection.
- A transport checksum does not authenticate a sender; application messages require their own framing.

Evidence and review
Byte-stream reliability, ordering, sequence/checksum/retransmission mechanisms, liveness limitation and segmentation boundary distinction.
