Conditional masses and densities
A conditional distribution renormalizes a joint law.
Key knowledge
For a discrete joint law, p(y|x)=p(x,y)/p_X(x) when p_X(x)>0. For a joint density, f(y|x)=f(x,y)/f_X(x) wherever the marginal density is positive.
Conditions and scope
- Density conditioning at an exact continuous value is not division by P(X=x).
- Versions of conditional densities can differ on sets of marginal probability zero.
