Reference electrodes and redox potentials
Electrode potentials are specified relative to a reference half-cell.
Key knowledge
An electrode potential compares a redox half-cell with a chosen reference. Consistently tabulated reduction potentials give a cell's standard potential as the cathode value minus the anode value. Potentials measure driving force per charge, not reaction speed.
Conditions and scope
- Specify temperature, reaction direction and standard states; standard does not inherently mean one fixed temperature.
- An individual half-cell potential cannot be measured without a reference and a complete measurement arrangement.
