Cellular organization and organismal diversity
Bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes differ in important cellular organization.
Key knowledge
Bacteria and archaea have prokaryotic cellular organization without a membrane-bound nucleus. Eukaryotic cells typically contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound compartments; animals, plants, fungi and diverse protist lineages are eukaryotic. Cellular organization is a useful classification dimension alongside evolutionary relationships.
Conditions and scope
- Specialized cell types can lose characteristic structures; not every mature eukaryotic cell retains a nucleus.
- Prokaryote is an organizational description, and this record does not settle deep phylogenetic topology or treat protists as one natural clade.
