Development and cell differentiation
Regulated cell states, division and spatial organization produce multicellular form.
Key knowledge
Multicellular development coordinates cell division, differentiation and spatial organization. Cell differentiation involves changes in gene-expression programmes and specialized function. In many animal embryos, cleavage and gastrulation organize early development; stem-cell populations can contribute specialized descendants.
Conditions and scope
- Developmental stages and germ-layer organization vary among animals and differ from plant development.
- Differentiation does not generally require changing the DNA sequence; cell potential depends on cell state, rather than every stem cell forming every tissue.
