Epigenetic marks and gene regulation
DNA-associated marks can affect expression without changing DNA sequence.
Key knowledge
Chemical modifications of DNA and associated proteins can affect how cells use genetic information without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Some regulatory states persist through cell division; inheritance across organismal generations is a separate, context-dependent question.
Conditions and scope
- Not every mark is causal, persistent or transmitted to offspring.
- The NHGRI examples concern human and other mammalian contexts; they do not establish universal transgenerational inheritance of acquired traits.
