Gene expression
Gene expression produces functional RNA or protein from gene information.
Key knowledge
Gene expression is the use of a gene's information to produce a functional product. Transcription produces RNA; for protein-coding genes, messenger RNA is translated into an amino-acid sequence. Some genes produce functional RNA that is not translated into protein.
Conditions and scope
- The transcription/translation sequence here describes cellular protein-coding expression.
- Expression is regulated and varies with cell type and conditions; not every gene encodes a protein.
