Meiosis and chromosome segregation
Typical diploid meiosis halves the number of chromosome sets through two divisions after one DNA replication.
Key knowledge
In typical diploid meiosis, one round of DNA replication is followed by two nuclear divisions that reduce two chromosome sets to one. Homologous chromosomes separate in meiosis I, and sister chromatids separate in meiosis II. Crossing over and independent assortment can reshuffle inherited variants.
Conditions and scope
- This describes the typical diploid-to-haploid sequence; variants and segregation errors require separate treatment.
- Life cycles differ: meiotic products are not directly the gametes in every organism.
