Extensions to simple Mendelian inheritance
Allele segregation and phenotype dominance are different questions.
Key knowledge
Incomplete dominance produces an intermediate heterozygote phenotype, whereas codominance expresses distinguishable contributions from both alleles. A population can contain more than two alleles at a locus. Such patterns extend simple dominant/recessive models without necessarily changing allele segregation.
Conditions and scope
- Two alleles per locus describes a normal diploid single-copy locus, not every genomic arrangement.
- Genotype ratios require the stated cross and segregation assumptions; phenotype ratios depend on the trait model.
