Phylogenetic inference from characters
Evolutionary trees are hypotheses inferred from comparative evidence.
Key knowledge
Phylogenetic inference compares morphological or molecular characters to propose evolutionary relationships. Shared derived characters help identify groups. Parsimony is one inference strategy that favours fewer character changes under its assumptions; additional data can change the inferred tree.
Conditions and scope
- Character selection and homology assessment matter; a resemblance alone does not establish ancestry.
- Parsimony is not a proof that evolution always uses the fewest changes.
