Protein structure and molecular function
Sequence, folding and assembly provide different levels of protein description.
Key knowledge
Protein primary structure is amino-acid sequence; secondary structure describes recurring local conformations; tertiary structure describes a polypeptide's three-dimensional organization; quaternary structure describes assembly of multiple polypeptides. Molecular interactions and environment influence folding and biological function.
Conditions and scope
- Not every protein has multiple subunits or one rigid conformation.
- Denaturation can disrupt higher-order structure without breaking the primary sequence; restoring conditions does not guarantee successful refolding.
