Speciation and reproductive isolation
Reduced reproductive exchange can permit populations to diverge into lineages.
Key knowledge
Speciation can involve divergence of populations and development of reproductive barriers. Prezygotic barriers reduce mating or fertilization, while postzygotic barriers reduce hybrid viability or fertility. Geographic separation is one route; isolation can also evolve without complete geographic separation.
Conditions and scope
- The process and its boundaries depend on the species concept and organisms being studied.
- Barriers can be incomplete; hybridization and ongoing gene flow complicate a simple split.
