Xylem and phloem transport
Vascular plants move water and organic solutes through different transport tissues.
Key knowledge
Xylem transports water and dissolved minerals; transpiration and cohesion–tension help drive upward water movement. Phloem transports photosynthates from sources to sinks through pressure-driven flow. A plant part can switch between source and sink as development or season changes.
Conditions and scope
- This description concerns vascular plants; transport patterns depend on tissue and environmental conditions.
- Source/sink flow is not simply one fixed direction, and xylem cavitation can interrupt water transport.

Evidence and review
Inspected cohesion–tension, cavitation and source-to-sink sections.
