Electron screening and effective nuclear attraction
Other electrons modify the attraction experienced by an electron in an atom.
Key knowledge
In multielectron atoms, electron–electron repulsion partly screens nuclear attraction. Effective nuclear charge is a model of that net attraction; changes in screening and orbital extent help explain periodic trends in atomic size and ionization energy.
Conditions and scope
- Screening depends on orbital penetration and electron distribution; it is not one universal constant for an atom.
- Periodic trends have exceptions and do not replace measured energies.
