Phase diagrams and coexistence
Phase diagrams describe equilibrium states under stated conditions.
Key knowledge
A pressure–temperature phase diagram for a pure substance identifies equilibrium phase regions and coexistence boundaries. A triple point permits three phases to coexist. The liquid–vapour boundary terminates at a critical point, beyond which those phases are not distinct.
Conditions and scope
- The diagram applies to the specified substance and equilibrium conditions; mixtures require composition information.
- Metastability and kinetic delay can prevent an actual sample from immediately reaching the depicted equilibrium.
