Reaction stoichiometry
Balanced coefficients relate the amounts consumed and produced by a reaction.
Key knowledge
Stoichiometric coefficients in a balanced chemical equation specify ratios of reactant consumption and product formation. These particle-number ratios also give mole ratios, so a known reacting amount can be converted into another reacting or produced amount.
Conditions and scope
- Use a correctly balanced equation for the specified reaction.
- Stoichiometric ratios concern amounts actually reacting; excess reactants, incomplete conversion and side reactions can change the final yield.
