Galactic rotation and inferred mass
Measured motions constrain the gravitational mass distribution.
Key knowledge
Galactic rotation curves compare orbital speed with distance from the centre. Within a gravitational model, those motions constrain mass distribution. The persistence of substantial outer-galaxy speeds is inconsistent with a simple model containing only centrally concentrated luminous mass and motivates additional distributed mass.
Conditions and scope
- Geometry, noncircular motion and the assumed gravity law affect inference; a galaxy is not generally a point mass.
- A dynamical mass estimate does not identify the microscopic nature of any unseen component.
