Climate detection and attribution methods
Attribution compares observed changes with plausible drivers and variability.
Key knowledge
Climate attribution evaluates contributions of candidate drivers to observed changes. Model experiments can compare all-forcing, individual-forcing and unforced simulations with observations. Distinct response patterns and multiple evidence lines help separate human and natural influences from internal variability.
Conditions and scope
- Conclusions depend on observations, model adequacy, forcing histories and the variable, scale and interval studied.
- Attribution of a long-term trend and attribution of one event are different analyses; a correlation alone is insufficient.
