Climate forcing and energy-budget perturbations
External changes can disturb climate's radiation budget.
Key knowledge
Climate forcings include changes in solar input, greenhouse gases, aerosols and land-surface properties that alter the climate energy budget. A radiative forcing quantifies an energy-flux perturbation under a specified convention; the resulting temperature response also involves adjustments, feedbacks and heat storage.

- Specify the reference state and forcing convention.
- Instantaneous, adjusted and effective forcing metrics are not interchangeable.
