Mutation and selection: different roles
Mutations do not generally appear because an organism needs their future advantage.
Key knowledge
Calling mutations random with respect to adaptation means that they do not generally arise because their future effect would benefit the organism. It does not mean every DNA site has an equal mutation probability or that mutation rates cannot change with environment. Natural selection instead changes representation through differences in survival and reproduction; inherited variation and its fitness effects depend on context.
Conditions and scope
- Distinguish mutation generation from the subsequent reproductive filtering of variants.
- Mutation biases, repair, exposure and cell lineage affect mutation occurrence and inheritance. This is not a claim that every mutation is neutral, equally likely or inherited by offspring.

Evidence and review
Inspected both Berkeley bodies distinguishing random-with-respect-to-need from environmentally altered mutation frequency. Excludes universal somatic-inheritance statements and does not claim independent reading of the historical experiments linked by the educational page.
