Population size, density and demographic balance
Total individuals and individuals per area or volume must be distinguished.
Key knowledge
Population size N counts individuals; density divides that count by a specified area or volume. For a fixed boundary and interval, the size change equals births plus immigration minus deaths and emigration. Count, biomass and percentage cover are different descriptors, and a sampling estimate can change through detection error without a corresponding demographic event.
Values and equations
N_2 - N_1 = B + I - D - E; density_area = N/A; density_volume = N/V
- N_1, N_2
- initial and final population counts within the boundary 1 (individual counts)
- N
- population count for the specified density snapshot, using the same boundary and time 1 (individual counts)
- B, I, D, E
- birth, immigration, death and emigration event counts over the interval 1 (individual counts)
- A
- specified occupied/sampled area m^2
- V
- specified occupied/sampled volume m^3
- density_area
- number of individuals per specified area m^-2
- density_volume
- number of individuals per specified volume m^-3
Conditions and scope
- Count all four event types for the same interval, boundary and definition of an individual; account for moving boundaries separately.
- Density requires positive area or volume. The equation is a bookkeeping balance, not a growth-rate prediction or a claim of perfect detection.

Evidence and review
Inspected Biology §45.1 size/density and sampling paragraphs and NCERT §11.1.2 B/I/D/E balance. NCERT loosely calls N density while using event counts; this record explicitly labels N total count and defines density separately.
