Limiting reagent, theoretical yield and percent yield
Stoichiometry gives a maximum under a specified reaction model; recovery measures the actual yield.
Key knowledge
For a single fixed net reaction taken to complete conversion, the limiting initial reactant gives the smallest available amount divided by its positive stoichiometric coefficient. Multiplying that minimum by a product coefficient gives theoretical product amount. Percent yield compares actual recovered and theoretical product on the same basis; side reactions, equilibrium, transfer losses or impurities can alter the observed result.
Values and equations
n_p,theory = nu_p min_i(n_i,initial/nu_i); Y = 100 q_actual/q_theory
- n_p,theory
- maximum newly formed product amount in this reaction model mol
- nu_p, nu_i
- positive product and reactant stoichiometric coefficients 1
- n_i,initial
- initial amount of reactant i mol
- Y
- percent yield expressed as a percent number %
- q_actual, q_theory
- actual and theoretical product quantities on the same amount or mass basis mol or kg, consistently
Conditions and scope
- Use one balanced reaction, nonnegative initial reactant amounts and positive reactant/product coefficients; newly formed product excludes any initial product.
- Theoretical completion is an accounting assumption, not a guarantee of actual conversion. Percent yield requires a positive theoretical yield and comparable purity/quantity basis.

Evidence and review
Inspected §4.4 limiting-reactant examples and theoretical/actual/percent-yield paragraphs. The minimum formula is explicit stoichiometric accounting derived from those examples; no claim that limiting reagents always fully disappear in an experiment.
