Complete ionic and net ionic equations
Cancel unchanged species while conserving both atoms and charge.
Key knowledge
A complete ionic equation represents dissolved strong aqueous electrolytes by their ions. Removing identical species appearing unchanged on both sides gives the net ionic equation. It retains solids, gases and molecular weak electrolytes as appropriate to the actual reaction. Both atoms and net charge must balance; a spectator label describes that equation, not an ion's inability to affect every solution property.
Conditions and scope
- First establish actual phases, dissociation and reacting species; an (aq) label alone is not permission to split every molecule into ions.
- Cancellation uses identical species and equal amounts on both sides. Strong-electrolyte representation is an introductory dilute aqueous model; ion pairing and activities may matter.

Evidence and review
Inspected §4.1 complete/net ionic equations and spectator cancellation in the AgCl precipitation example, with §11.2's dissolved strong/weak-species distinction. Does not infer species merely from solubility labels or use spectator as a universal chemical inertness claim.
