DNS names, records and caching
DNS distributes typed resource records through a delegated naming hierarchy.
Key knowledge
DNS uses a hierarchical name tree and typed resource records. Authoritative servers serve zone data; resolvers find and may cache answers. A record's TTL limits its ordinary cache lifetime. A name can have multiple records and need not denote one IP address.
Conditions and scope
- Delegation divides authority into zones; a cache is not the authoritative zone.
- TTL is a cache bound, not a guarantee of instantaneous global change. Later security and cache-extension rules require their own specifications.
Core concepts only; later security extensions and historical tuning recommendations excluded.
