Percent and relative change
A percentage states a ratio per hundred and needs an explicit base.
Key knowledge
p% means p/100. For a positive original amount, signed percent change is one hundred times the new-minus-original difference divided by the original amount; a negative result denotes a decrease.
Values and equations
p% = p/100; C = 100·(N−O)/O
- p
- Numerical percentage
- C
- Signed percent-change number, reported with %
- N, O
- New and positive original amounts in the same units
Conditions and scope
- Compare amounts measured in the same units and state which original amount is the denominator.
- The relative-change formula is undefined at an original amount of zero; it is not an absolute difference.
Only these mathematical portions; no independent proof certification. Historical price, nutrition and policy examples excluded.
