Polynomials and degree
Finite sums of nonnegative integer powers with fixed coefficients.
Key knowledge
A real polynomial is a finite sum Σᵢ aᵢxⁱ with nonnegative integer exponents and real coefficients. For a nonzero polynomial in combined form, its degree is the highest exponent with a nonzero coefficient; that coefficient is the leading coefficient.
Values and equations
p(x)=Σ(i=0 to n)a_i x^i, a_n≠0 ⇒ degree p=n
- p
- Nonzero real polynomial
- x
- Real input
- a_i
- Real coefficient of x^i
- n
- Highest exponent with a nonzero coefficient, a nonnegative integer
- i
- Integer index from 0 through n
Conditions and scope
- Combine equal powers before identifying the degree.
- The degree rule here excludes the zero polynomial; a nonzero constant has degree zero.

Scope or convention differs
Historical approval retained from its original dated scope: Nonzero examples have highest-power degree, including constant degree zero. The repository cancellation and zero-polynomial exclusions make the informal introductory definition precise.
