Target measurement uncertainty
An intended-use target differs from achieved uncertainty.
Key knowledge
Target measurement uncertainty is an upper limit decided on the basis of the intended use of measurement results. It is a design or acceptance objective, not a physical constant or a statement that the existing procedure has achieved it. The procedure and reported uncertainty must use a consistent uncertainty convention when assessing the target.
Conditions and scope
- State whether the target concerns standard or expanded uncertainty and, for expanded uncertainty, the coverage convention.
- Targets depend on the application; a desirable limit does not justify omitting real components from an uncertainty budget.
