Series and parallel capacitor networks
Capacitor network rules differ from resistor rules.
Key knowledge
Ideal linear capacitors across the same two nodes have C_parallel=ΣC_i. A series chain with initially neutral floating intermediate conductors has 1/C_series=Σ1/C_i: charge magnitudes on its capacitors are equal while voltage drops add. Pre-existing intermediate charge can shift individual voltages and must be retained.
Values and equations

Conditions and scope
- Positive fixed capacitances, ideal conductors and negligible leakage; the stated initial-charge condition is required for the simple equal-charge explanation.
- Parasitic coupling, dielectric nonlinearity or extra intermediate connections change the network model. The equivalent terminal incremental capacitance can still be evaluated with fixed trapped charges, but individual charge states are not assumed equal then.

Evidence and review
Read §8.2 series8.3 and parallel8.4 actual derivations. Initial neutral intermediate plates qualify the source’s unqualified equal-charge statement; fixed-offset distinction is a disclosed consequence of charge conservation and Q=CV.
