Turing machines and effective computation
Finite instructions can act on an unbounded writable tape.
Key knowledge
A Turing machine uses finite states and transition rules to read, write and move on a tape. A universal machine simulates encoded machines. The Church–Turing thesis identifies effectively calculable procedures with Turing-computable ones.
Conditions and scope
- Unbounded tape is a mathematical abstraction; a halting computation uses finitely many steps.
- The thesis is a characterization of effective procedure, not a theorem that every physical process or problem is computable.
