Axioms, deduction and mathematical proof
A mathematical proof derives a conclusion within stated assumptions and rules.
Key knowledge
Axioms are assumptions accepted within a mathematical system. A proof derives a proposition from those assumptions and previously established results through permitted logical deductions.
Conditions and scope
- State the assumptions and inference rules used.
- A theorem is established relative to its hypotheses; this entry does not certify the consistency or completeness of an axiom system.
