Laplace, heat and wave equation problems
A PDE becomes a solution problem only with a domain and data.
Key knowledge
Canonical scalar PDEs are Laplace Δu=0, heat u_t=Δu and wave u_tt=Δu. Boundary-value or initial-boundary problems additionally specify data; the wave equation needs both initial displacement and initial velocity.
Conditions and scope
- Coefficients are normalized to one and Δ is the spatial Cartesian Laplacian.
- Declare the domain, boundary/initial data and solution regularity; existence, uniqueness and stability are not automatic.
