Rings and identity conventions
A ring combines addition with distributive multiplication.
Key knowledge
A ring has an additive abelian group and associative multiplication distributing over addition on both sides. Here a unital ring also has a multiplicative identity; multiplication need not commute.
Conditions and scope
- The identity convention must be stated when comparing definitions.
- Zero divisors and noninvertible nonzero elements are possible.
