Convergence and Cauchy sequences
Real convergence can be checked by distances between late terms.
Key knowledge
A real sequence aₙ converges to L when, for every ε>0, all sufficiently late terms satisfy |aₙ−L|<ε. In R, convergence is equivalent to the Cauchy condition: late terms become uniformly close to one another.
Conditions and scope
- The Cauchy equivalence uses completeness of R.
- A bounded sequence need not converge.
