Multiplication and division
Count equal groups, distinguish sharing from making groups, and check with multiplication. Split calculations into parts; interpret zero and remainders in context.
Key knowledge
For whole numbers m and n, mn counts m groups of n items. Division a/b asks for a number q satisfying bq = a; in the rational numbers this has a unique result when b is nonzero.
Values and equations
a/b = q ⇔ bq = a, with b ≠ 0

Conditions and scope
- Division by zero is undefined.
- Whole-number division may leave a remainder; its quotient need not be a whole number.
- Repeated addition here defines the whole-number case, not every generalisation of multiplication.

Scope or convention differs
Whole-number groups, multiplication and inverse division with possible remainder.
The repository rational quotient and nonzero-domain statement is broader than the initial whole-number model.
