Reading graphs
Read a graph’s quantities, units, ticks and context before judging its visual impression. Calculate differences, reference-based percentages and interval rates from the represented values; distinguish legitimate zoom from distorted spacing; and keep samples, interpolation, missing information, uncertainty and causal explanations separate.
Key knowledge
A plotted point represents values through the graph's stated coordinate system. Read each coordinate against its own axis scale; points on the graph of an equation satisfy that equation.
Conditions and scope
- Use the labelled quantities, units, origin and scale; a point's screen height alone is not its value.
- For observed data, a joining line or model adds an interpretation between measured points.

Scope or convention differs
Coordinates on an equation graph satisfy that equation.
The source covers mathematical lines, while observed-data interpolation needs the separate repository caution.
