A stabilizer code is the common fixed subspace of an abelian Pauli subgroup excluding minus identity.
Key knowledge
A stabilizer code is the common fixed subspace of an abelian Pauli subgroup excluding minus identity. For an [[n,k,d]] code, n physical qubits encode k logical qubits and distance d controls correction of up to floor((d−1)/2) arbitrary unknown-location errors in the ideal recovery model. CSS codes use compatible classical parity-check structures; compatibility is a commutation constraint, not simply two arbitrary classical codes.
Conditions and scope
- Code distance concerns nontrivial logical operators; degenerate errors may share a syndrome.
- The counting bound assumes ideal syndrome/recovery and does not include faulty gates or repeated measurement costs.

Evidence and review
Author checked this English statement, displayed equation where present and stated hypotheses against these source locations: §7.2 equation 7.17, CSS/stabilizer codes, distance, §7.18 surface-code thresholds and resource caveats; draft textbook chapter. The check is bounded to the recorded claims; no complete proof reconstruction, software proof replay or universal literature completeness is claimed.
