Zero knowledge as a simulation property
Research context
postgraduate concept · established · As of 2026-10-10
Zero knowledge requires an efficient simulator for the verifier's allowed view without the witness, with exact, statistical or computational indistinguishability as specified.
Key knowledge
Zero knowledge requires an efficient simulator for the verifier's allowed view without the witness, with exact, statistical or computational indistinguishability as specified. Honest-verifier zero knowledge covers an honest challenge process and is weaker than protection against arbitrary malicious verifiers. Noninteractive proofs need an explicit setup or oracle model; simulation is not merely deleting the witness from a transcript or a claim that the public statement discloses nothing.
Conditions and scope
- Fix relation/witness, simulator powers, verifier class, setup and distinction metric.
- Soundness and zero knowledge are separate obligations; neither implies the truth of an application's input data.

Sources retain their recorded scope. A source link alone does not establish verification of every statement.
Evidence and review
Author checked this English statement, displayed equation where present and stated hypotheses against these source locations: Encryption games chapters 2–3/9/12, authentication chapters 6–8, signatures chapter 13, reductions and identification/zero knowledge chapters 18–20. The check is bounded to the recorded claims; no complete proof reconstruction, software proof replay or universal literature completeness is claimed.
