A normed real or complex vector space is Banach when every norm-Cauchy sequence converges in that space.
Key knowledge
A normed real or complex vector space is Banach when every norm-Cauchy sequence converges in that space. L-p spaces, 1 ≤ p ≤ infinity, use equivalence classes modulo almost-everywhere equality and are complete. C([a,b]) with the supremum norm is complete. In contrast, continuous ramps on [0,1] can converge in L1 to a step with no continuous representative, so the L1 norm does not make that continuous-function space complete.
Conditions and scope
- Underlying scalars, norm and measure space are declared; L-p identifies functions equal almost everywhere.
- The explicit counterexample derived from the L1 definitions is f_n(x)=max(0,min(1,n(x−1/2))) for n>=2; its L1 distance from the indicator of (1/2,1] is 1/(2n). Thus it is L1-Cauchy, but its unique a.e. limit has no continuous representative.
- Completeness is not compactness; closed bounded subsets of an infinite-dimensional Banach space need not be compact.

Evidence and review
Author checked this English statement, displayed equation where present and stated hypotheses against these source locations: Lecture 1, pp. 1–7: norm, completeness, sequence/function examples; §7.1 almost-everywhere quotient and norms; §7.4 Theorem 7.10 and proof: completeness for 1<=p<=infinity on a measure space. The check is bounded to the recorded claims; no complete proof reconstruction, software proof replay or universal literature completeness is claimed.
